Literature Text

You sighed and brushed your [H/C] hair out from your face as you cleaned the counter, covered in spilt caramel sauce and crumbs from the Caramade Franks. Your job was exhausting, with long hours, but there was one thing you looked forward to during your day.

Every day, unless he was on a mission, he would come into the store by himself and order one Caramade.

Every single day.

In your first week of working at the store, you soon realized that his order never changed, and he was always on his own. This piqued your interest in the man, and you asked your co-workers about him.

“Oh, [Y/N], him? He’s a Fairy Tail mage; they’re always up to no good. But if you’re interested, I could tell you his name, for a price of course!” Your co-worker gave you a cheeky grin, but you didn't care. You had to know.

After picking up her weekend shift, his name was whispered in your ear as you prepared a Caramade for a customer.

“Gray Fullbuster, Ice Mage.”

Just his name gave you chills, no pun intended. His dark eyes gave nothing away, and his cool demeanour only served to make you more curious about him.

Three months had passed since you had learned his name, and you had done nothing to introduce yourself to him. The only words you had spoken to him were “The usual?” and “Have a great day!” At this point, you were afraid that you’d never say anything else to him. You sighed again and continued cleaning the counter whilst there was a break in the wave of customers, slipping into an easy daydream where the two of you were on a picnic feeding Caramade Franks to one another.

Your reverie was shattered when your co-worker burst through the main doors of the shop, breathing heavily. “[Y/N]!” she called, staggering over to you and slamming her hands down onto the now-shining counter. “I was walking to work, and I saw Gray come out of the Fairy Tail building, so I ran here from there to tell you to ask him to dinner, when he comes in!” she exclaimed, gasping for breath at the end of her statement.

You sputtered. “H-how could I do that? I wouldn't know what to say to him!”

She sighed. “It’s simple. Would you like to grab dinner some time? There, it’s easy.”

“No way,” you said, shaking your head emphatically, “he doesn't even like me like that!”

“[Y/N], if you don’t ask him, you’ll never know how he feels towards you! Now c’mon, you've spent too long staring at him, it’s time to go for it!” she huffed, before moving behind the counter and getting ready to take over your shift. You let out a shaky breath before giving a tentative nod, causing her face to widen with an ecstatic grin. “That’s the spirit, go get him tiger! He should be here any minute.”

As you began to fold up your cloth and put away the cleaning supplies, the doors opened and a gust of air snatched your cloth from your hands. You let out a small cry as you looked up, only to see it come to a complete stop on Gray’s face. “Oh!” you squeak out in embarrassment, rushing from behind the counter to apologize to him.

Gray let out a muffled grunt, before bringing his hand up to pry the cloth off his face. He looked at you and drew his eyebrows together, before handing you the cloth with a simple “Here.”

“Th-thank you,” you stammered, your face heating up in embarrassment. “I’m so sorry about that,” you apologized as you walked back behind the counter in order to serve him, your co-worker mysteriously nowhere to be seen. “I’ll get your usual for you, but I wanted to ask you something first,” you said, trailing off into nothingness as he raised an eyebrow.

“What is it?” he asked bluntly, staring at you as you tried to gather the courage you needed to ask him to dinner. Out of the corner of your eye, you spotted your co-worker giving you two thumbs up, grinning madly.

You let out a quick and quiet breath, before opening your mouth to ask him, when the doors opened again.

“Gray-sama! How could you leave Juvia behind in the Guild like that?” a bluenette woman screamed, before running over to stand beside him.

Gray let out a long-suffering sigh before turning to Juvia. “I was just getting a Caramade, there’s no need for you to be here too!”

This ‘Juvia’ woman pouted, before exclaiming “If Gray-sama wants a Caramade, then Juvia wants one too!”

Your mouth, which had stayed open in shock, snapped shut as you turned around to try to compose yourself. This woman had called him –sama! You teared up slightly as you realized that Juvia must be his girlfriend. You let out another breath, rubbed your eyes quickly, and moved to make two Caramade Franks for Gray and Juvia.

As you finished up spreading the sauce over the Caramade Franks, you caught the eye of your co-worker, who smiled sadly as she slipped on her apron. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, as you swept past her with the Caramades in hand. You gave a sad smile before turning to face Gray and Juvia again.

“That’ll be 200 Jewels!” you said loudly, over-compensating for the sadness you felt.

“Thank you!” Juvia squealed excitedly, grasping Gray’s arm in excitement and jumping up and down.

Gray ripped his arm away, grabbing the Caramade Franks and giving a gruff “Thanks,” before turning to leave. At the doors, he turned, his face in a frown again. “What is it you wanted to ask me?” he questioned, slowly walking closer.

“It doesn’t matter now,” you said, giving him one last bright smile before he turned and walked out of the shop. You sighed one last time, watching him leave with Juvia on his arm.

The Ice Mage had positively frozen your heart.
